Item Description
15.25x22" professionally framed and double-matted display contains vintage sepia tone photo portrait of Harding and 6.25x7" letter on White House stationery dated May 6, 1921. Typed letter reads "My Dear Mr. Ambassador Whitlock: Mr. Sheppey Has Handed To Me Yours Of Last February In Which You Make It Wholly Convenient For Me To Change Ambassadors To Belgium, And In Which You Make Many Cordial And Pleasing Expressions. It Was Not Necessary For You To Have Written The Letter Because I Understood From Personal Interviews With Our Mutual Friends That There Was Ample Understanding Without This Written Expression Of It. I Have Told Mr. Sheppey How I Feel About The Situation And He Will Probably Convey To You Something Of My State Of Mind When He Calls On You In Person. This Will Probably Be Better Than Undertaking To Write It. With Very Best Regards, I Am, Very Truly Yours, W.G. Harding." Letter was to Brand Whitlock, a journalist and President Wilson's ambassador to Belgium. Folded once as mailed with 3 small age spots not affecting signature, which remains bold. Comes with original White House mailing envelope with May 7, 1921 postmark. Exc. Comes with Hake's COA.
