Item numbers 976 though 2670 in auction 196
Item Description
Lot of 16, about 6.5x8.5" segments of animation paper, each featuring 5x7.25" image area done in bw watercolors and black ink. c. 1940s as in the 1940s, Max Fleischer wanted to bring back Koko as a cartoon character and did for a short time. Set of storyboards has to do w/actual flying saucers complete w/teacups and a rocket belt inadvertently getting attached to Koko w/expected humorous results. Given the renewed interest in space in the late 1940s due to Roswell, the topic was on the public's mind. Title board has nice profile portrait of Koko and "Koko The Space Kop" title w/"By Max Fleischer" underneath. Pages go on to show Koko investigating booth w/text "Wonder What's Inside?", next page reads "Looks Like Nobody's Home." Upon further investigation, Koko discovers a wide variety of technical gizmos, slipping tubular glass helmet over his head in nice scene on next page. Next page shows Koko w/"helmet" and rocket belted around his waist w/text "Gee - This Belt Is Heavy." Air raid warden is seen in next page w/binocular at eyes watching flying saucers/teacups w/text "Heavens--Flying Saucers!!" Next page has closeup of flying saucer barrage w/text "Never Saw Them With Cups In 'Em." Air warden runs toward booth in next page w/text "I'll Send The Sentinel After Them." Next page shows air warden seeing shadowy figure (Koko) w/what looks like a gun sticking out of doorway w/text "Ah - There He Is - And Ready To Go." Next page shows Koko from behind w/rocket and air warden gesturing frantically "Quick--Flying Saucers--Up You Go!!" The air warden lights Koko's rocket's fuse in next panel "I'll Blast You Off--Get Going." Next page shows booth exploding w/large "Zoom" sound effect as "Koko Crashes Through The Wall." Next pages shows a frightened Koko flying through air w/scared "Help" text as he is chased by angry-looking flying saucers. Next page shows large "Crash" as flying saucers tumble away and Koko cringes "That Should Finish The Saucers." Last page shows Koko falling to the ground, landing on his behind. Pages are numbered 1-14, 17, 19. Story board #19 has moderate edge wear, 1.75x2" area of moisture staining in upper left corner and .5x1" area of staining to left of Koko. .25x5.5" streak of tape staining at bottom margin. VG. Rest of story boards remain clean and display Exc. Great images and a comical scene.
