Auction #198 Part I
Item numbers 1-499 in auction 198
Item Description
12.5x31.25" frame contains matted original 6x25" pen and ink art for Feb. 22, 1934 daily strip and has ©1934 A.P. paste-over at bottom of fourth panel. "Dickie Dare" is an often overlooked gem in Caniff's career (his first published work), running for 25 years, but still overshadowed by his other successes such as "Terry And The Pirates" and "Steve Canyon." The premise of the strip was that Dickie's imagination took him on adventures w/characters from fiction and history. This strip has Dickie w/Sir Dagonet and Dickie's dog Wags. Art is signed by Caniff in the last of 5 panels. Lightly aged at margins, but still displays Exc. Caniff has also signed piece in red pencil "For Murray Harris - Best Wishes Milton Caniff - N.Y.July 1970." Murray Harris was a longtime noted collector of original comic art. Great, early Caniff art.
