Item Description
Lot of 3 single panel original pen and ink/charcoal art dealing w/race relations in the 1960s. All on thin art board. First is 12.5x15.25" and is by "Richmond Times Dispatch" cartoonist Fred Seibel. Depicts God writing in "History" book looking at Earth w/"Vietnam War, Historic American And Soviet Space Flights, Live TV Photos Of The Moon" and "Alabama Civil Rights March" news topics catching his eye. Cartoon originally ran Mar. 28, 1965. Exc. Second cartoon is 4x18.5" titled "Martin Luther! Are You Setting Yourself Above..." by "Nashville Banner" cartoonist Jack Knox. Art depicts Martin Luther King Jr. sitting at desk on cloud throwing down papers w/"Moral Law Supercedes Civil Law, Sit-In Director, Extend Integration Orders" text. Directly below him is cloud w/Chief Justice Earl Warren. Cloud Warren sits on is labeled "Warren & Co." Warren holds up paper w/"This Is 'The Law Of The Land'" to which bewildered onlooker underneath holds copy of "Constitution." Cartoon deals w/King putting himself and Civil Rights above Supreme Court and The Constitution. Lt. aging but VF/Exc. Last cartoon is 11x14" titled "Sweet Land Of Liberty" w/art by "Grand Forks Herald" cartoonist McDonald. Dated 1965, art depicts Black man and cowering child leaning against "Welcome To Selma, Alabama" billboard and deals w/reaction of townspeople, police, etc. to the famed Selma march. Billboard has zipatone accents. Displays Exc. First and last cartoons come w/matching mats, cartoonist name label at top of first and cartoon title label at bottom of last.
