14.5x18.75” original unmarked chipboard slipcase shows moderate wear with tears and chips, 2 clear tape repairs at upper edges. VG-. Slipcase contains amazing 14.5x18.25” clothbound hardcover published by The Hyperion Press in 1941. This is a signed and numbered limited edition, being extremely low #2 of 1000 printed. Book has been signed on page opposite title page in black ink “To Alexander Duetsch With Great Admiration From Your Fellow Worker On This Book – Hirshfeld.” Hirshfeld has also added the date, “Nov. 24th, 1941.” Book opens with text and bw Hirshfeld illustrations and then progresses to titled and tipped-in bw and color illustrations by Hirshfeld depicting “Ebony Sister” (black nun), “Plastered” (featuring drunk woman being escorted by policeman, “Reefer Man” (depiction of black gentleman with joint in hand), “Lindy Hop” (depiction of black couple jitterbugging), “Solid Sender” (depiction of black drummer), “Apollo Corine” (depicting female showgirl in revealing tuxedo and top hat), “Jam Session” (depicting jazz band playing), “Sharpy Family” (depicting dandy-looking black family out for a stroll), “Cocoa Venus” (depicting topless black woman reclining in bed), as well as several Bali-related sketches. Text was by William Saroyan. Book shows lt. wear along spine which shows some aging. Cover is Fine/VF overall. Pages are clean and Exc.
