In 1914, the nation’s oldest military organization, the Artillery of Massachusetts, was invited to Philadelphia as a guest of the Lu Lu Temple. A suitable mounted escort was needed to meet and escort them. W. Freeland Kendrick (who later became the Imperial Potentate and Chairman of the Board of Shriner’s Hospital for Children) organized a unit out of the membership. The turnout was an instant success. There now are many Mounted units in the Shrine of North America, but Lu Lu Temple Mounted Guard is the “Daddy” of them all. Original frame has lt. wear. Fine.
