Item Description
17x19.5” overall. 11x14” image area. Text at bottom reads “First Annual Dinner Of The/Lu Lu Temple Mounted Guard/A.A.O.N.M.S. (Ancient Arabic Order Of The Nobles Of The Mystic Shrine)/Thursday January 27th 1916/Adelphia Hotel/Philadelphia.” Photo of fancy lodge banquet with men in lodge regalia and women in fancy dress gowns. Large capital letters in bkg. read “Lu Lu/TMG” (Temple Mounted Guard). Very fancy /elaborate ballroom is seen in bkg. with large US and lodge flags. In 1914, the nation’s oldest military organization, the Artillery of Massachusetts, was invited to Philadelphia as a guest of the Lu Lu Temple. A suitable mounted escort was needed to meet and escort them. W. Freeland Kendrick (who later became the Imperial Potentate and Chairman of the Board of Shriner’s Hospital for Children) organized a unit out of the membership. The turnout was an instant success. There now are many Mounted units in the Shrine of North America, but Lu Lu Temple Mounted Guard is the “Daddy” of them all. Original frame has lt. wear. Fine. Photo by “Bell & Fischer” remains clean and bright. Exc. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
