Item Description
4x6.5x1.75”. Hinged box lid has engraved loving cup on top portion that reads “Princeton University/Class Of 1915.” Inscription at center reads “Presented To ‘Nance’ Hanks/Whose High Achievements Have Added To The Renown Of Princeton University and Brought Distinction To The Class Of Nineteen Hundred And Fifteen.” Front of box reads “June 1967.” Bottom of box has manufacturer’s name and reads “Gorham Sterling.” Three hallmarks appear below this text followed by the number “302.” Box interior holds divided wood insert, likely to hold cigarettes. On the inside of the box lid is a list of 23 names followed by a year. List starts with Philip Drinker-1942. The 23rd name on the lid is that of “Nance” Hanks-1967. Our extensive research found that one name appears twice, both 1943 and 1946. This is James V. Forrestal. He was Secretary of the Navy 1944-1947 and became the nation’s first Secretary of Defense 1947-1949. The other notable is Maurice Pate with the year 1950. Among Pate’s many accomplishments, he is best known for being the founder and first director of Unicef from 1947-1965. An exhaustive research has come up with no insight as to the accomplishments of the recipient of this sterling silver box, Nance Hanks, but we feel certain that the high achievements of this individual were certainly noteworthy. Box has lightly tarnished areas and would anticipate an easy cleaning. Overall Lt. wear, well made and VF.(see previous Ivy League item #840) From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
