Item Description
Post cards/figure. Lot of 3. First are two 3.5x5.5” postcards. First is 1920s real photo postcard with action scene showing club employees with text “Usual Argument Over The Daily Loot/Pirates Den 8 Christopher St. Greenwich Village NYC.” Great image. Unused. Lt. dust soiling on reverse. VF. Second is 1930s postcard. Printed image of interior of “’Main Deck’ The Pirates Den” followed by Greenwich Village address. Map on back with directions to the pirate’s den is designed like pirate map. Unused. Minor corner wear. VF. Last is 4x6.5” tall by .75” thick painted wood cut out pirate figure. Back of figure has the remains of a label that reads “Souvenir Of The Pirates Den” followed by Greenwich Village address and “Originated And Designed By” with the remains of the label reading “…man.” The missing portion of the label likely read “Don Dickerman” who owned the Pirates Den. Labelhas moderate aging, wrinkles. Good. Dickerman was obsessed with pirates and took every opportunity to portray one himself. At this well-known establishment, the colorfully outfitted servers staged mock battles for guests. The night club and Dickerman became nationally known and made him a minor celebrity. He even had a small part in Errol Flynn’s pirate move “The Sea Hawk” in 1940. Dickerman is believed to be pictured on the first postcard in this lot wearing a skull and crossbones design on his shirt. Wood figure shows scattered paint chips. Fine. An interesting souvenir from an out of the ordinary night spot. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
