Item Description
Lot of 2. Both c. 1930-32 when he was Heavyweight Champion of the world. 3.5x5.5” real photo postcard with text “Max Schmeling/Champion Heavyweight/W.L.Stribling/Cory Osceola Chief of the Seminoles/Copyright Doubleday.” Stribling was a heavyweight boxer who died in a motorcycle accident in 1933. Chief is with his wife and child. Tiny crease in emulsion by wife. Lt. aging on unused reverse. Fine. 5x7” photo with inked names “Jackie Kid Berg and Max Schmeling.” Berg fought professionally between 1923 and 1936. 192 professional fights/157 wins. In 1931 he moved to the US from Britain and won 64 out of 76 fights. He became British lightweight champion in 1934. Berg has been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame/World Boxing Hall of Fame and International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. This is his personal photo with blue ink notation on back written in his hand “Max & Myself when he won the World’s Championship." Black ink inscription in someone else’s hand but repeated front and back reads “Jackie Kid Berg/Max Schmeling.” Reverse with glued black surface paper from removal from scrapbook. Moderate handling wear with creases. VG. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
