Item Description
3-piece lot for c. 1944-1945 run of stage production about a prostitute banished from her home by her father. Production starred Earle Hyman, the renowned American stage, television and film actor most known for his recurring role on The Cosby Show as Bill Cosby’s father. Making his Broadway debut in 1943, Hyman started a 2-year run on “Anna Lucasta” the following year playing the role of Rudolph. 6.5x9” Mansfield Theatre playbill is dated Apr. 1, 1945 and has been signed on front cover in blue ink by Hyman, adding his character name. Lt. handling and aging with .25” tear to top margin of front cover. VF. 3.5x5.5” bw postcard shows Anna Lucasta and star Hilda Simms, an African-American stage actress best known for her starring role on Broadway in this production. Simms has signed back of postcard in blue ink “Sincere Wishes For Everything Good – H. Simms.” Frederick O’Neal was an American actor, theater producer, television director who founded the American Negro Theatre and became the first African American president of The Actors’ Equity Association. O’Neal has signed back of card in blue ink “Thank You Frederick O’Neal.” Last name slightly smudged with ink. Earle Hyman has also signed back of card in blue ink “Most Gratefully Earle Hyman.” Lt. handling wear but VF/Exc. 8.5x10.75” “Anna Lucasta” program has several bw photos as well as biographical data about stars in the play. Scattered handling wear with pinch creases and rust soiling at spine. Interior spine shows aging. Fine-. Comes with Hake’s COA.
