Item Description
36x36” frame contains original ink and watercolor art that has been professionally and attractively triple-matted to 11x14.5”. Art depicts full figure image of Superman smiling and waving at viewer. Art is signed “Jack Burnley ’92” at lower right with additional hand-lettered “Golden Age Superman” text at upper left and “From N.Y. World’s Fair Cover 1940” at the lower left. Smaller 3x5” opening has note in Burnley’s hand reading “This Is A Re-Creation Of The First Drawing Of Superman Ever Done Without The Help Or Supervision Of Joe Shuster. Original By Jack Burnley ’92.” Burnley (1911-2006) was a noted King Features Syndicate sports cartoonist when he was hired by D.C. Comics editor Whitney Ellsworth to work on “Superman” independently of the Joe Schuster shop. Burnley only did a small handful of re-creations, most being black and white. This is one of his finest, in full color and attractively matted in a frame which matches the early triangular symbol on Superman’s chest. One of the nicest pieces of Superman art we’ve offered in our 44 years. N. Mint.
