8.5x11” typed letter on “Institute For Exploration” letterhead dated Aug. 22, 1997. Noted marine geologist speaks of the influence Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” had on him as well as the influence of Marco Polo, Lewis & Clark as well as Captain Cook, bolstering his desire to explore, leading to the discovery of the Titanic. Ballard, president of the Institute For Exploration also is noted for discovering the undersea wrecks of the German warship Bismarck and the Lusitania. Letter has been folded as mailed and has handling wear with creases along right margin. Fine+. Ballard’s signature in blue ink remains Exc. Comes with Hake’s COA.
