Item Description
17x25” overall. 10x18.75” image area. Great view of play action taken from the left field bleachers of Philadelphia’s Connie Mack Stadium. Stands are filled with well-dressed black and white men seated side by side (not segregated as might be expected) to watch this World Series opening game. Text at bottom right continues “…Philadelphia, PA./Batteries(sic) For The Kansas City Monarchs, Rogan & Duncan. Hilldale, Cockrell & Santop.” Bullet Rogan was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998. Hilldale’s third baseman Judy Johnson – HOF 1975. Other notables: For the Monarchs catcher Frank Duncan. For Hilldale Louis Stantop and Biz Mackey. Close inspection shows play action of batter in stance, runner on first base and pitcher winding up. Two creases (4” to 5”) appear in upper portion of image, not affecting play action. Light aging appears in upper left above stadium almost giving the impression of a wispy summer cloud (not offensive). Photo remains glossy and Fine. Professionally framed and matted and ready for display. An important piece of Negro League and American history. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
