Item Description
Pair of hand-colored very limited issue 2.25” buttons with “Badge-A-Minit” on the reverses. Initials on one stand for Western Shoshone Defense Project. The Western Shoshone have long disputed land issues with the U.S. Government. In 1973 the Native American Dann family of Crescent Valley, Nevada led by Carrie and Mary Dann were sued by the Bureau of Land Management for exceeding horse and cattle grazing permits. The case was in courts from 1974 to 1991 when the Supreme Court ruled aboriginal rights had been extinguished. In 1991-1992 the BLM served notice and made round-ups of “Non-Authorized” livestock. On Nov. 20, 1992, the BLM rounded up horses and many federal police were present when they tried to leave with the first load. Clifford Dann, brother of Carrie and Mary, poured gasoline on himself and threatened to set himself on fire if the horses were not released. In a scuffle to get a lighter away from Dann, a police officer got splashed with gasoline. There was no fire but Clifford was arrested, convicted in federal court of assaulting a federal officer and spent 9 months in jail before being released on probation. These 2 rare buttons, the only examples we’ve seen, are circa the early 1993 effort to “Free Clifford Dann” and to “Free Clifford Dann Now!” Essentially Mint.
