Item Description
This example from Richard Merkin’s Collection is the only one known to us. From the previous group of 30 Kolb’s buttons, 15 players and “Spencer Abbott Mgr.” are shown on this button. Five players for which no 7/8” button is known to us make a total of 21 photos. Those 5 are clockwise: Ward-SS./J. Enzmann-P./Lambke-P./R. Judd-P./Ormand-LF. The reverse of this once had a hanging cord now gone. Also, it was apparently saved to serve as a Christmas time ice pond display for miniature ice skaters as the button’s reverse has thin layer of old adhesive and scattered tiny flakes of mica to simulate snow or ice. The large paper label by maker Bastian is still largely intact but damaged and hard to read. Most importantly, the button’s front has survived quite well with just slight tan moisture marks on the outer rim edge from 12 o’clock to 7:30 o’clock. The marks extend inward 1” but only at the 5 o’clock location (and very faint) and in most areas well under .5”. On the extreme edge between 3-6 o’clock there is a surface hairline crack in the celluloid but this doesn’t show from the front and barely shows edge-on. At the top “Washburn” has 1/16” dia. cello dot off lower chin and “R. Miller” has 1/8” cello dot off lower edge of image. There are a couple scattered tiny .25” scratches but very minor. Overall VG and still with full color and gloss. Extremely rare. From the Merkin Collection and comes with COA.
