Item Description
Richard Merkin worked at assembling this group of team buttons which played in the International League over many years. The two missing that are listed in Hake/Steckler Non-Paper Sports Collectibles are “Lynn-C.” and “Washburn-2B.” Also see next item, unknown when NPSC was published in 1986, a huge 7.5” Kolb’s Bread button picturing 20 players and manager for “Season 1923.” This near set of 30 buttons was used 1922-1923. Each is 7/8” and all have their Bastian backpaper. 16 of these 30 also appear on the 7.5” button. Among the 30 is “Chief Bender-Mgr.” who managed in 1922. Also among the 30 is “Spencer Abbott-Mgr.” who was hired November, 1922 for the 1923 season. Abbott appears on the 7.5” button along with 5 players for whom no 7/8” button is known. Among the 30 buttons, these are the ones with quite minor defects: Barrett-3/8” hairline split barely visible even in reflected light; Bates-on reverse a 1/8” hairline cello split; Clarke-on reverse small stain traces; Martin-pinpoint rub on rim edge; Post-on reverse .5” hairline cello split; Schacht-as made photo area darker than others; Swartz, M. Thomas and Tragesser all have on reverse .5” or smaller hairline cello split. All 30 buttons display totally stain free with full gloss and essentially Mint appearance. The most complete set known to us. From the Richard Merkin Collection. Comes with Hake’s COA.
