Item Description
3-3/8x5.5” on glossy stiff paper stock. Title reads “The Best Fighters I Ever Fought” followed by a list of 10 names which are “Jim Jeffries, Bob Fitzsimmons, Sam Langford, Stanley Ketchel, Tommy Burns, George Gardner, Hank Griffin, Jack O’Brien, Joe Jeanette, Joe Chonyski.” At center is bluetone photo of Johnson holding a cigar and below this is text “Best Wishes From Jack Johnson Former Heavyweight Champion Of The World.” Boldly signed in black ink just to the left of the photo and running vertically on the card. While signature is distinct, ink flowed a bit heavily when card was signed resulting in bit of excess ink at center of signature. The blank reverse has inked notation from original obtainer, “St. Patrick’s Day March 1946 NY City Museum At 42nd St.” This dates the signature just a few months prior to his death of June 10, 1946. Reverse also has ink stamp noting former collector and pencil date “March 1946” on front bottom right margin. Lt. aging and trace of handling wear with tack hole to the right of the photo. Fine. A rare and very desirable autograph. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
