Item Description
17.5x26” screen print in colours on tin from an edition of 10,000 published in 1969 by Dodo Designs. Has holes at corners as made for mounting. Printed on reverse is text describing the image and giving brief bio on Peter Blake. Text includes “Babe Rainbow, A Fictitious Lady Wrestler, Is The Most Recent In A Line Of Wrestlers I Have Painted/A Wrestler Living In The Fictitious World Of Peter Blake/It Is The First Painting Ever To Be Commissioned For Reproduction As A Picture On Tin.” Personally etched by Peter in the lower right red border is “For Richard And Connie With Thanks Peter Blank New York Dec. 1971.” Sir Peter Blake is one of the leading figures in British pop art and was a personal friend of Richard Merkin’s. Best known for designing the iconic album cover to the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (on which he included his friend Richard Merkin), Blake’s work is inspired by his love affair with icons and the ephemera of popular culture. Tin has a few minor margin indents from handling, small trace of aging to both front and back including some small scattered spots of lighter discoloration to color border design but all remains totally bright and glossy. Still displays VF. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
