Item Description
1-3/8” (35mm) complete with original shank. Catalogued by Albert as Washington Inaugural #12C and by DeWitt as GW1789-3. This size and design is known with border accent indent marks totaling 49, 54, 63 or 72. This is the version with 63. Known as “Eagle With Star,” displayed is an eagle with shield between the spread wings, olive branch in right talons and 3 arrows in left. The “star” above is a heraldic Estoile with alternating wavy rays between the 6 arms of the star. Both sides have over 2 centuries of uniformly dark patina, having never been cleaned. On the reverse, about 60% of the surface has a nice glossy finish while 40% has a more matte finish due to trivial surface oxidation. The entire front of the button has very nice reflective glossy finish. Likely silvered copper although the thin silver flashing evaporated over the years as is typical for these. Extremely well struck and extremely Fine.
