Item Description
1.25” without dot pattern also reading “Provisional President Of Africa.” Garvey was the leader of the ‘Back To Africa’ movement and founder of the short-lived Black Star Steamship Line, which sold stock through coupons in African-American newspapers. Whites considered him an agitator and J. Edgar Hoover prosecuted him for mail fraud. Button has lt. all-over extremely shallow surface marks just showing in reflected light and o/w displaying essentially Mint. There is no stain. Bottom edge has name of maker Phila. Badge Co. Surface is rather flat rather than domed but this is as made. Reverse includes union bug stamp. This is the second of 2 examples acquired for the Hake Collection over the years.
