Item Description
#84, c. 1920s. 3-3/8x5-3/8” showing dark street at nighttime with clock tower and upper left and glow from street lights in distance. Slight loss of silvering at edges, mostly just visible in reflected light. Unused and VF. Beals (1870-1942) was a female pioneer in the field of photography and became the first woman to be hired as a staff photographer on a US newspaper. During her long career, Beals made numerous portraits of famous people including President Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain and many others. Image has nice use of light and shadow. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
