Item Description
c. early 1900s. Each is 3-3/8x5-3/8”. First has six photos in star designs of Japanese Esperanto Society members with hand-written text and names in ink in Japanese. Reverse side is postally used, written in Esperanto and addressed to society member in Danzig, Poland. Second postcard has image on front of persons of different nationalties reading “Esperanto” newspaper. Unused. Trace of lt. dust soil. Second card has a few lt. moisture marks on reverse. Both Fine. Esperanto is the most widely spoken constructed international auxiliary language. It was first talked about in the 1880s and is still in use today with estimates of the number of people who are fluent in Esperanto ranging from 10,000 to as high as 2,000,000 people. Esperanto was officially recognized by Unesco in 1954. The first International Esperanto Congress was organized in France in 1905, probably about the time the postcard with the men reading newspapers was made. Interesting images.
