Item Description
c. late 1920s. Four thin cardboard panels, each measuring 18.25x40”. Includes 2 different scenes. First scene is panels 1 and 3 titled at top “Make Your Dream Garden A Reality-Farm And Garden Tools.” Panel #1 has large image of Flip with cigar in mouth about to throw vase full of roses with sunflowers with faces in bkg. and ornate buildings in distance. Panel 3 has image of Dr. Pill and older man getting their hats blown off from water spray with text at bottom “Winchester Farm And Garden Tools Stand The Test Of Cultivation” with printed signature of artist at lower right. Missing second panel which had Impy using goose to spray water from pond with Nemo and Princess coming down stairs of palace. Next 2 panels are #2 and #3 and titled at top “Modern Lilliputians-General Merchandise.” Both comprise scene of angry large giant wearing hat titled “Prices” chained down with Flip directing elves to tighten chains as other elves look on laughing. Chains have price tags titled “The Winchester Stores.” Missing third art panel which had boots, more elves, etc. Printed by Atlantic Lithographic & Printing Co. N.Y. Reverse side of first 2 has partial art with Toonerville Trolley characters by Fontaine Fox, reverse side of second 2 posters has art by Dick Spellger showing young couple. Poster boards have bit of wear around edges, most noticeable at corner tips. Each poster is missing pieces ranging from .5” to 2” at corner tips. Poster #3 showing giant’s leg is missing several pieces across bottom ranging in size from .25x1.5” to 2.5”. Despite problems, rest of image area has a fine and bright appearance. Scarce. Hard to find a complete set with all 8 panels in nice condition. Wonderful McCay art and one of the few display items he ever did.
