Item Description
20.25x24.5” wood frame has opening revealing 17x21-3/8” pen and ink original art. Image area is 16.75x18” showing both contenders in the ring before fight which was held Aug. 26, 1913 in Boston, Mass. Sam Langford (1883-1956) is shown at the left with “The Tar Baby” name on his chest saying “Tell De Folks Down “Round Brockton Way Ter Lookout Fo’ Suthin’s Comin’ That Way!” As Dan Flynn, with name “Porkando” says “Hm!-Wonder If I’ve Got The Right Kind Of Ballast For This Job?” while holding a jug of glue in his left hand. Upper right corner shows “Sam’s Appetizer” showing him hidden by pile of wood he’s chopping. Right side shows him being distracted by turkey with Flynn about to hit him with sledge hammer with caption “Sure! Porky Has Got A Chance To Knock Him Cold” and bottom right shows Flynn wrestling a bull with caption “True To The Traditions Of The Game Both Are Doing A Little Training Stunt Like This On The Side.” Lower left side shows Flynn sweating while rowing a boat with heavy-set woman in it. She’s saying “Don’t You Just Dote On Browning Mr. Flynn?” as he answers “Nope! I Don’t Smoke Any Kind Of Cigarettes When I’m Trainin’!” Text underneath says “Rowing Is A Great Feature Of Porky’s Training.” Art is signed just beneath right side of ring “William S.” We believe art is by cartoonist William Summers. Sam Langford won the fight in the fourth by way of knock-out. This was their second of 3 fights. Art has some aging and dust soil with a few moisture marks at right side and bit of page rippling at lower right. Fine overall. Superbly detailed art. Professionally framed. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
