Four items. 6-1/8x7-7/8” glossy photo by Pacific & Atlantic Photo New York City has text caption on reverse “Old Sam Langford (left) Who Is In New York Seeking To Save His Sight And Who Years Ago Was Known Of The Gamest Colored Fighters Of All Times Greeted Erminio Spallo, Italian Heavy In New York Seeking Honors, At The Queensboro Stadium May 27. 5-27-24.” Photo has lt. creasing, mostly just visible in reflected light. Left side extreme margin edge is missing tiny piece. Upper right corner is missing .5x.5” bit of surface paper. VG. Comes with 3 postcards, all c. 1910. All approximately 3.5x5.5”. Real photo American postcard has caption on front “Number 29, Langford & Jordan” with “Dana Photo S.F.” logo at lower right. Photo shows well-dressed Langford and Jordan in boxing ring in summer sun with huge spectator crowd in bkg. Left side has .25” faint moisture mark on left side of Sam’s jacket. Bottom of has .75x2” lightly tanned area from remnants of glue on reverse. Paper caption taped on reverse side has cellophane tape which has yellowed and a few bits of missing paper at top and bottom. Trace of lt. dust soil but VF appearance overall. Other 2 postcards are French. One shows Langford in gym clothes making fists, the other shows him from behind posing shirtless. Both have trace of lt. dust soil. Reverse side of first card has a few ink notations in French. Fine/VF. Wonderful early images. Charlie Rose ranked Langford as the #1 all-time heavyweight; Nat Fleischer ranked him as a #7 all-time heavyweight; Herb Goldman ranked him as a #2 all-time heavyweight. Langford was elected to the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1955 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
