Item Description
Large 25x29” wood frame with archival mat has 19x22-7/8” opening revealing April 5, 1915 White Studio photograph with multi-scenes ©1915 Jack Curley. Top has panoramic scene of fight at Oriental Park Racetrack Mariano, Havana, Cuba. Left side center has photo of Jess Willard titled “World’s Champion” and right side has photo of Jack Johnson titled “Defeated Champion.” Center area has photos of both managers, Jack Welch referee, Bob Vernon time keeper with photo of Jack Curley promoter in center flanked by image at the left showing start of the fight and image of the right titled “The K.O. 26 Round” showing Johnson on canvas. Just below Curley photo is “Original Forfeit Check Which Launched The Match” made out to Robert C. Vernon for $10,000 and dated Sep. 12, 1914. Near bottom of photo are reproductions of “Permits, Sanction And Presidential Letter Granting Cuban Permission.” Inset photos include Johnson training, introducing Willard, Willard and Johnson receiving instructions, Cuban president in his box, grandstand section with crowd, Johnson landing left hook, Willard on scales, Willard entering the ring, Johnson on scales, Willard rushing in and Cuban soldiers entering ring after fight. Margin photos include great photo of well-dressed Johnson in white suit with cane and top hat being introduced along with Willard at the race track. Willard (1881-1968) earned the nickname “The Great White Hope” by winning the heavyweight title from Johnson in this fight. Small traces of handling wear/aging only noticeable upon close inspection. Two corner tack holes. Light emulsion yellowing. Fine/VF but displays Exc. as professionally framed. An impressive piece of boxing history.
