Item Description
In 1931 after the season ended, 14 players toured Japan matching up against local teams and winning all their games. The team was co-managed by Herb Hunter and sports writer Fred Lieb and the roster included Lou Gehrig, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, Frank Frisch and Rabbit Maranville. George Kelly (1895-1984) played utility. Kelly played briefly with the New York Giants beginning in 1915 and became a line-up regular in 1920 when he led the league with 94 RBI’s. Kelly drove in 100 or more runs for 4 consecutive seasons and batted .300 or higher in 6 consecutive seasons. He was traded to the Cincinnati Red Legs in 1927 and wound up with the minor league Minneapolis Millers in 1931. He retired in 1932 as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Frame is 20.75x34-1/8” with 19-7/8x33” opening with recessed backboard holding 17.5x32” poster with nice photo of Kelly at top wearing American All-Star uniform and text caption in Japanese on bottom one-third. Photo has 3/8” hole at upper right and .25” moisture mark at upper left, caption paper at bottom is worn around edges. Fine. Displays great as professionally framed. Rare. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
