Item Description
15-5/8x22-5/8” artboard has 9x9” image area in center in ink, watercolor and pencil. Wonderful image shows art deco-style couple kissing on side of sinking steamship with bubbles going up in air. She’s topless and her bra is on the bow. Art is titled “Sinking” in pencil just below scene. Art was done as a concept “title card” used to denote different sections of the Merchant Ivory film “Savages.” Art is drawn by noted illustrator Charles White III and lettered by logo designer Michael Doret. Art is very much in the style of John Held Jr., an artist that White greatly admired.  Unsigned but reverse side has Charles White address label which has Michael Doret’s address written on it in ink. Section with logo is on separate thin artboard which has been applied to larger artboard. Trace of lt. dust soil and aging here and there. Top half is lightly but evenly tanned. Watercolor has slight fade. Fine. Charles White III was recently featured in a book titled “Overspray” which is about great airbrush artists of the 1970s. Michael Doret worked in the promotional department of Vogue and Butterick and became a freelancer leading to more interesting assignments including the KISS Rock And Roll Over album. Wonderful image. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
