Item Description
5x7" glossy shows both catchers in Santa Clara uniforms on grassy ballfield. Typed text in Spanish on reverse translates to “Champions Of Cuba 1937-38" and photo is dated November 22, 1938. Lower left of front has photographer stamp Hernandez Studio Santa Clara. A 1937 champions patch is visible on Gibson’s sleeve. Emulsion has yellowed a bit, photo has some lt. aging and handling wear but Fine. Josh Gibson (1911-1947) was a catcher in the Negro Leagues. He played for the Homestead Grays from 1930 to 31, the Pittsburgh Crawfords from 1932 to 1936 and back with the Grays from 1937 to 1939 and 1942 to 1946. Gibson was the first manager of the Santurce Crabbers, a franchise of the Puerto Rican Baseball League. He was considered by many as the black Babe Ruth and had a lifetime Batting Average of .359, according to the Hall of Fame's official data. A super crisp and clear image.
