Item Description
1.25" without backpaper. Very slight stain on edge from one to three o'clock, four surface scratches about 1/8" to 3/8" mostly just showing in reflected light, and a small dent on the reverse collet. Button still displays quite cleanly and with full gloss. This button represents a jubilant moment in the early radical labor movement. Haywood, a mine worker at age nine, later met Knights of Labor member Patrick Reynolds, who greatly influenced his political views. Haywood joined the Western Federation of Miners (see previous item) and worked to increase wages and end child labor. In 1905 with Debs, De Leon, Mother Jones and others he helped form the I.W.W. in opposition to the A.F. of L. In 1905 Haywood was charged (with two others) in taking part in the murder of Frank Steunenberg, former Governor of Idaho. Charles Darrow defended the three, and this button dates from the time of Big Bill's acquittal July 28, 1907 which was celebrated as a major victory for organized labor. Historic and rare.
