Item Description
2.25x6" check dated 2-2-61 is neatly filled out in blue ballpoint pen in the amount of $22.80 and made out to "Dept. of Water & Power" and is signed "U.E. Iwerks". Personal check has Iwerks’ printed address in Sherman Oaks, CA at upper left. Check has cancellation holes in center and cancellation ink stamp just below right center. VF+ appearance with nice clear autograph. A rarely seen signature. Iwerks (1901-1971) spent most of his career with Walt Disney. When Walt Disney began his Laugh-O-Gram cartoon series in 1922 Iwerks joined him as chief animator. In 1923, Iwerks followed Disney to Los Angeles to work on the Alice Comedies which had live action mixed with animation. After the series ended Disney and Iwerks came up with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit which was distributed by Universal in 1927. Disney lost control of the character and Iwerks came up with a new character for Disney which would eventually be called Mickey Mouse. Iwerks opened his own studio in 1930 with characters including Flip the Frog and later Willie Whopper. He then worked briefly for Warner Bros. and other studios before returning to Disney in 1940. He mainly worked on special effects and also helped develop many Disney theme park attractions. He won two Academy Awards for designing an improved optical printer and for collaborating on the perfection of color traveling matte photography. Check would be great to display with any early Oswald the Lucky Rabbit or Mickey Mouse image. Rare. Comes with Hake’s COA.
