Item Description
6.75x10 7/8" matte photo shows 20 member team in uniform with Dihigo standing fourth from right in back row. Union Luguna was a Mexican League team and Dihigo played with them from 1941 to 1943 and in 1946. Photo has yellowed with age and has scattered lt. dust soil with a .25x1" moisture mark at lower left and a few tan spots in white areas at top. Reverse side has some surface paper from scrapbook removal and glue stains around sides which do not show on front. A few lt. handling creases. Fine appearance. Dihigo (1906-1971) was a Cuban player in baseball’s Negro Leagues and Latin American Leagues who excelled as a pitcher and second baseman. He began his professional career in the winter of 1922/23 at the age of 16 and had his first summer in US baseball in 1923 as a first baseman for the Negro League’s Cuban Stars (East). He played in the Negro Leagues from 1923 through 1936 and again briefly in 1945. Over the course of his career he played all nine positions. He led the Negro Leagues in home runs in 1926 and 1935. His combined American, Dominican, Cuban and Mexican statistics result in a lifetime .302 career batting average with 130 home runs (11 seasons worth of home run totals are missing) and 252-132 pitching record. A wonderful sharp and clear photo. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
