Item Description
7x10" glossy shows Roy Campanella in Dodgers uniform sitting in dugout with Martin Dihigo who is wearing a suit, tie and hat with suitcase between the two of them. See item #1408 for Dihigo Union Laguna team photo. Lower right has Salas New York imprint and reverse side has ink stamp “Archivo Bohemia” dated June 30, 1957. Photo has a few lt. handling creases just visible in reflected light, otherwise Exc. Campanella began playing Negro League baseball in 1937 and played with the Mexican League in 1942 and 1943. In 1946 he moved to the Brooklyn Dodgers minor league system and had his first season in the major leagues in 1947 and played his first game with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 20, 1948. He was their regular catcher from 1948 through 1957 and played in every All Star game between 1949 and 1956. He won the MVP award in the National League in 1951, 1953, and 1955. He helped propel the Brooklyn Dodgers to its first ever World Series Championship in 1955. His baseball career ended suddenly on January 28, 1958 when he became paralyzed after a car accident.
