Item Description
1.5x2-3/8" Cuban card produced for the Aguilitas Cigarette brand. The baseball cards are a sub-set featuring 44 players from the Cuban Professional League. This extensive 900 card set also featured movie and stage stars, boxers and other subjects. Glossy photo front with text below portrait "Charleston Base Ball." Crisp and strong image. The card back has the card number and an ad for Aguilitas (baseball subset was numbered 841-899). This is one of the key cards in this very desirable Cuban set. Oscar Charleston (1896-1954) was a Negro League star who played in the Cuban League for seven seasons between 1920-1930. The teams included: Bacharach, Santa Clara, Almendares, Habana, Cuba and Marianao. He had a career batting average of .360, an all-time Cuban League high. A multi-talented star, Oscar Charleston was renowned by those who saw him play as the finest all-around player in Negro League history. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1976. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
