Item Description
11x21" card stock has wonderful art image of noted early comic strip artist Tad at right with pocket tin of "Patterson's Tuxedo Tobacco" at left. c. 1910. Text includes "T. A. Dorgan, The Famous Tad, Originator Of The Daffydils, Says: "Tuxedo Can't Be Equaled In Soothing, Refreshing Qualities. It's Mildness Insures A Pleasant Smoke, It's Coolness Removes All Tongue Bite" with facsimile signature "T. A. Dorgan". Sign has registration marks around sides, likely a printer's proof. Collar area of Tad suit has a few barely noticeable lt. scuffs, o/w sign is bright and Exc. Besides Daffydils, Tad also did Judge Rummy, Silk Hat Harry, Indoor Sports and Outdoor Sports. He is also credited with creating or popularizing phases such as hot dog, dumbbell, cat's meow, cat's pajamas, drugstore cowboy, and "Yes We Have No Bananas" which became a popular song. Striking graphics and probably one of the first examples of a product which had an endorsement by a cartoonist. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
