Item Description
3.5x5-3/8" c. 1914-1917. Wonderful image has 11 players in uniform including six players sitting on bench with manager Rube Foster wearing suit with catcher's mitt on his left knee and five players standing. Pictured team includes Hall of Fame members John Henry "Pop" Lloyd and Pete Hill. Card is postally unused and is in choice clean condition. Overall VF/near Exc. appearance. The team was formed in 1911 by Andrew "Rube" Foster and became the premiere independent baseball team in the west throughout the 1910s. Foster organized the first viable professional black league, the Negro National League, in 1920 with his American Giants as the cornerstone franchise. From 1910 until the mid-1930s the Chicago American Giants were the most dominant team in black baseball. An incredibly rare and desirable team postcard. Two auctions ago we offered a Leland Giants postcard with Foster and Hill which sold for $22,137. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
