Item Description
5-1/8" dia. felt with cloth backing designed like baseball. Patch has lt. wear around extreme edges, likely from removal from uniform. Fine. Comes with 7.5x10.5" unaddressed manila envelope which has "Wilmer Fields" return address label at upper left with Manassas, VA address. Envelope has been cut open along right side and has a few lt. creases, otherwise Fine. Patch refers to the Homestead Grays who were the Negro National League champions in 1940. The team was first organized in 1912 and Vic Harris managed the Grays during their years in league play between 1935 and 1948. He guided the team to six consecutive pennants from 1937 through 1942. Wilmer Fields (1922-2004) was a pitcher and third baseman who joined the Homestead Grays in 1939. He was part of eight championship teams and was selected as most valuable player eight times in various baseball leagues. He also played outfield and accepted offers from teams in Latin America, the Toronto Maple Leafs of the AAA International League in 1952 and the Intercounty Baseball League in Canada in 1951. Fields helped his team win the championship title in the 1951-52 season in the Venezuelan Winter League. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
