Item Description
7.5x9-5/8" glossy photo has ink date of 1946. Front shows five players standing in uniform inside stadium with their names and positions hand lettered in ballpoint pen on their right legs. Photo left to right includes Wilson 3-b, Marquez 2-b, Carlisle 2-b, Bankhead s.s., and Leonard 1-b. Photo has lt. handling creases with a few small color rubs but image is crisp and clear. Overall VG/Fine. The team was formed in 1912 by Cumberland Posey, and remained in continuous operation for 38 seasons. The team was based in Homestead, PA near Pittsburgh. From the late 1930s through the 1940s they played at Pittsburgh Forbes Field and also played at Washington D.C.'s Griffith Stadium, the home park of the Washington Senators. The team had six consecutive pennants from 1937 to 1942 and won the Negro League World Series in 1943 and 1944. Buck Leonard (1907-1997) began his negro league career in 1933 with the Brooklyn Royal Giants, then moved to the Homestead Grays in 1934 and played with them until his retirement in 1950. First basemen Leonard was referred to as "The Black Lou Gehrig". He led the Negro leagues in batting average in 1948 with .395 and usually either led the league in homers or finished second in homers to teammate Josh Gibson. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
