Item Description
This is one of the largest stickpins we've ever seen with 2" across die-cut brass plate reading "Ruth McCormick For Congress." The reverse holds a 2" vertical pin. She was the daughter of Mark Hanna, the man who engineered William McKinley's presidential campaign. She took an active role in the women's suffrage movement beginning in 1913. From 1913 to 1914, she served as head of the Congressional Committee for the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She took over leadership from Alice Paul, who went on to form the Congressional Union as a separate national suffrage organization. During her time as leader of the Congressional Committee, she produced an 8-reel melodrama "Your Girl and Mine" which was intended to help gain support for the suffrage movement. She was also chairman of the First Women's Executive Committee of the Republican National Committee. In 1928 she successfully ran and was elected to office as the House of Representatives member from Illinois's at-large district. She served from March 1929 through March 1931. This stickpin is from her 1928 campaign and is in Mint condition. Only example we've seen.
