Item Description
6.25x9.25" b/w card has gold accent text across top "Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year From The Newark Eagles And The Manleys". 21 players are shown in uniform with players in front row holding gloves. Card has bit of light rippling from faint moisture mark on reverse. Displays Fine. Effa Manley (1897-1981) was a female sports executive and the first woman inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. She co-owned the Newark Eagles baseball franchise in the Negro League with her husband Abe from 1935-1946 and was sole owner through 1948 after his death. The Newark Eagles began in 1936 when the Newark Dodgers merged with the Brooklyn Eagles. They shared Ruppert Stadium with the New York Bears. The Newark Eagles were a professional Negro League baseball team that played in the second Negro National League from 1936 to 1948. The 1946 Colored World Series was the fifth colored world series between the Eastern Negro National League and the Western Negro American League. This series marked the last appearance by J.L. Wilkinson's Kansas City Monarchs in the world series and the only colored world series championship for Effa Manley's Newark Eagles. The team had a star keystone combination of second baseman Larry Doby and short stop Monte Irvin. Under the guidance of Manley, the team beat the Kansas City Monarchs in a seven game series. Extremely limited distribution. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
