7" tall original painted Epoxy prototype for series one figure of Colossus Rex from "The Outer Space Men" by Colorforms (see carded figure item #2925). From 1968. This figure is one of only three original figures that were cast in epoxy from creator Mell Birnkrant's original plaster and clay sculpts. It was made by a professional model maker in New Jersey. Directly from Mel’s newly finished sculpts before they were sent to Hong Kong. There were three sets of Epoxy figures made. Mel used this actual figure to work out the colors. He then duplicated the colors on the two other sets. One was sent to the factory as a color guide, He retained the other set himself for reference. While waiting for production samples to appear, Mel proceeded with building the miniature scenes for the package photography. Thus he purposely, but regretfully, broke some of the joints of this figure and re-glued them into a more realistic pose to use the figure as a stand-in while creating the scenes. Thus, this figure was both the original paint model and the “body double” for Colossus Rex. His right shoulder has a .5" sliver chip to the top of the outer accent disc and a finger is missing from left hand. The joints that at first glance would appear to have been repaired and repainted are actually the results of the creative process described above. All the breaking, Gluing and repainting, was done by Mel himself 45 years ago. The original paint and patina is fresh and bright and the figure overall displays Exc. Colossus Rex is ready for his Close-up! This is a unique, one-of-a-kind figure. An incredible item for the Outer Space Men completist or any serious action figure collector/historian.
