Item Description
6.5x10.25" mat finish photo shows 19 players lined up on field in uniform with pile of bats and gloves in center along with “Cubans” bag. Photo has inked text at lower right “New York Cubans Base Ball Team Jacksonville, Florida April 20-35". Lower right also has “Photo By Weems” printed text credit. Reverse side has inked list of all players shown which includes Alejandro Oms, Martin Dihigo, Lazaro Salarzar and Luis Tiant Sr. Emulsion has yellowed with age and photo has some lt. handling creases with tiny piece gone at upper right corner tip and bit of wear at other corner tips. VG overall but a great image. Prior to 1930 there were two different teams for the Cuban Stars, one was East and one was West. Both teams folded around 1930 but owner Alex Pompez created a new Cuban team called The New York Cubans in 1935. The team was composed of Cuban players as well as players from other nationalities including the United States. Their home field was Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, N. J. A wonderful and historic image w/legendary players. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
