Item Description
Each is approximately 7.75x9 5/8" thin cardboard titled “Diploma” with printed image at left side of player leaping in air with open glove above base. Each has been signed in ink by President Ernesto Carmona V. and Secretary Gabriel Atristain. Lower right corner has ink stamp dated Oct. 12 1938. Center has hand-lettered text in Spanish written in ink with portion of text translating to "Eagle of Veracruz." First certificate is made out to "Martin Dihigo Llanos" with text translating to "Batting Champion And Pitching Champion". Lower right corner has actual real photo of Dihigo in uniform looking to his right. Bottom edge has wax which holds ribbon which attached 1" diameter brass accent medal with relief image on front of player at bat with catcher and umpire behind him. Certificate has been trimmed just a bit unevenly across top and bottom edge and is tanned with a few lt. creases and a few very faint moisture marks. Fine appearance. Dihigo (1906-1971) excelled as a pitcher and second baseman. He began his professional career in the winter of 1922/23 at the age of 16 and had his first summer in US baseball in 1923 as a first baseman for the Negro League's Cuban Stars (East). He played in the Negro Leagues from 1923 through 1936 and again briefly in 1945. Over the course of his career he played all nine positions. He lead the Negro Leagues in home runs in 1926 and 1935. Buck Leonard said of Dihigo "He Was The Greatest All-Around Player I Know. I Say He Was The Best Player Of All Time, Black Or White. He Could Do It All". The only player elected to Cuban, Mexican and American Hall of Fames. Second certificate for Garcia has text translating to "Championship Team Member." No photo at lower right corner and no seal with ribbon or medal at bottom edge. Numerous handling creases and dust soil. Just Good. Truly unique, historic and one-of-a-kind items presented to the players. See Veracruz signed baseball #1289 and Veracruz uniform #1290. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
