Item numbers 1447 through 3204 in auction 204
Item Description
37.5x63" heavy duty aluminum frame with plexiglass holds c.late 1920s-1930s die-cut cardboard sign for famous bug spray made by Standard Oil Co. Sign is 37.25" tall and 62" wide scored in two places for store window or counter display. Left and right sides have art image of Flit Man dressed as toy soldier using can of spray and center area has eight panels designed in comic strip format with specialty art by creator Bud Fisher. Top four panels have Mutt and Jeff being attacked by giant insects. Flies in dining room scene, roaches in kitchen, mosquitos in bedroom and moths in closet and they fight them off with a coffee cup, pistol and shoe. They end up in their ragged bed clothes looking in closet at chewed up clothes and wind up out in the yard at sunrise with each wearing a barrel because they have no pants. Jeff sees a “Flit” sign and they rush to the Flit store which is titled “Recruiting Station” and designed like a can of Flit. Last panel has both of them dressed as Flit soldiers carrying Flit products. Lower left and lower right of sign each have text “Join The Health Squad”. Sign has split through center, top to bottom but framing improves look. Sign also has heavy wear at top and Flit soldier at right side is missing his hat and bottom right corner tip is missing 2" piece. Color rubs around edges with tiny bits of paper missing along seams with some lt. creasing across top and narrow moisture mark at left side to panel area of comic strip. Overall VG but comic strip area remains Fine and sign has bright color. Despite problems, color is strong and sign has wonderful design. Rare and first we have seen in our 45 years. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
