Item Description
March-April 1943 issue of Superman has classic cover art of sign painters working on classic image of Superman. Front cover is signed in Sharpie pen in person at upper right "To Charlie & Joan Best, Jack Burnley". Light wear along spine and extreme margin edges, third story has two small panels clipped, last page of last story has 2.25x2.5" piece gone at bottom. Color still strong and bright. Overall Good. 8-3/8x10-7/8" "Gettysburg Sketches" 1939 softcover book illustrated by Frederic Ray, Jr. Has cannon image on front cover and 32 bw pages nicely illustrated in comic book format published by Times and News Publishing Co. Gettysburg. Back cover has text of Lincoln's Gettysburg address. Extremely limited distribution. Covers have some aging with tiny bit of insect damage here and there. Overall covers VG, contents VF. Jack Burnley was the first artist to work independently of Joe Shuster on Superman, penciling over 100 covers for DC Comics before leaving in 1947 to resume his newspaper sports cartooning career. Fred Ray began his career with National Comics in 1940 and was cover artist on "Superman's Christmas Adventure" and is also noted for redesigning the "S" on Superman's chest. He also worked on Batman covers before going on to Tomahawk. Well drawn pair of Superman ghost artists publications. See Jack Burnley sports cartoon original art #2730.
