Item Description
14x15.75" art board has 12.5x13.75" India ink and litho crayon image area with some applied Zipatone dot pattern. Art has large 49ers player holding ball with tag "First Place" as large devil type with pitchfork flies towards him labeled "L.A. Colosseum Jinx" and pitchfork labeled "8 Straight Colosseum Losses". Player is saying "Scat! Vanish! Go Up In Smoke! You're A Myth - A Fable - An Old Wives Tale!" as devil says "Oh Yeah? Then How Come I've Been Stickin' You Since 1953?" Symbolic ram is at lower right saying "About Time I Went On A Rampage!" with his bandaged nose with text "That 34-0 Plastering At Kezar". Art likely refers to Oct. 4, 1959 game when the 49ers beat the Rams 34-0 and art was likely done for Nov. 8, 1959 game which the 49ers also won. Art is signed in ink at lower right "Jack Burnley" with his artistic signature. Bottom margin has pencil text "4 Col Special Fri Spts". Lower right has bit of whiteout otherwise image area is near Exc. Jack Burnley began his career as a sports cartoonist in 1929 before going on to DC Comics in 1940, returning to sports cartooning in 1947. He worked for the San Francisco News until his retirement in 1976. Any Jack Burnley original art is rare, and this is an exceptionally well drawn example with full signature. See Jack Burnley signed Superman comic #2729.
