Item Description
22x23" high quality wood frame with double archival mat has 15.75x16.75" opening revealing wonderful five part India ink cartoon by Len Warren with superb 13.25" tall image of Gehrig holding bat and caption which includes "Batting Along At A .375 Clip Leads The Pace-Setting Yankees Around The Last Lap -". Upper left has three different images including Detroit Tigers player/manager Mickey Cochrane being chased by a tiger. Lower right has image of Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx hitting each other with a bat titled "Home Run Honors." Upper right has image of player waving his hat from convertible (with spare tire labeled "Beat The Yanks") at a couple comprised of another ball player and his lady who wears a baseball outfit labeled "Pennant Hopes." Art is inscribed in blue pencil at the lower left "To My Good Friend - Earle Nazar Of Whom I Expect Big Things In The Near Future - My Best - L. D. Warren 11-12-41". Art is titled at top in ink "The Yanks Are Slipping?-? Sports Cartoon - Philadelphia Record (1941)", though art is definitely mid-1930s. Lower right has pencil note mentioning drawing was done by Warren while he was with the Philadelphia Record. Lower left inscription area has 1.75" barely noticeable tear and lower right text has 2.75x3.5" glue stain from missing caption. Right side edge has three small horizontal tears ranging in size from .5" to 1" and lower has small bit of masking tape remnants in 1" area. VG but displays Fine. Superb art for this baseball legend.
