Item Description
1-5/8x2.25" Cuban card tobacco issue. Numbered C21-60, the baseball cards are part of a much larger set that also features boxers, actors and actresses, nudes and more. The baseball subset pictures mostly players from the 1923-24 Cuban Professional League. Printed on glossy paper the cards were meant to be glued into an album. Card front features head shot with text "Base Ball Torriente C-43." Distinctive black border around the image which remains sharp, clear and bold. Card back has issuer/series information. This is the most desirable card in the set. Torriente began playing professionally with the Cuban Stars of the Negro League in 1913, and led the American Giants to Negro National League pennants between 1920 and 1922. He holds the Cuban League record batting average of .352 and hit as high as .402 with Almendares. Inducted into the National Baseball HOF in 2006.
