Item Description
7.25x9.25" glossy photo shows 15 players in uniforms sitting and standing on field. Lower left has photographer name "Mora". This particular team with these players is considered the greatest in Cuban League history. Players of note include National Baseball HOF members Oscar Charleston and Jose Mendez, Cuban HOF member Alejandro Oms, plus Dobie Moore, Oliver Marcelle, Frank Duncan, Eustaquio Pedroso. Photo has scattered wear with some creasing including vertical crease in center and at right side. Photo has been archivally matted to sheet of stiff paper. Overall Good. Despite problems, a clear, sharp and distinct image. The Leopardos began play in 1922 to provide competition for their main Cuban rivals, the Almendares and Habana teams. Both teams were owned by Abel Linares who also became owner of the new Santa Clara club. Santa Clara did not finish its first season but withdrew from the league in protest over claims that Sunday games played there should not count in league standings. The team rejoined the league in 1923-24. A classic and historic photo. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
