Item Description
From the Estate of Peter J. Vorzimmer, co-author of the 1967 NASA Project Gemini Chronology book. See item #1046 for Vorzimmer biography. Glossy photo has been professionally framed and matted to 10.5x12.75" in a 18x19.25" brushed aluminum frame w/UV glass. Photo shows a view of the Gemini 8 command module and the Agena Target Vehicle as seen in outer space. Signed in black ink by the first man to walk on the moon - astronaut Neil Armstrong - and fellow moon walker Dave Scott. Separate signature areas measure 2.5x11" and read "To Peter Vorzimmer - Best Wishes From Gemini VIII - Neil Armstrong" and Scott has signed his name in a 1.25x2" area. Signatures have lightly aged, so that ink appears dark brown. Scott's signature has moderately faded. Fine. Armstrong's signature is VF. The Gemini 8 mission was launched Mar. 16, 1966 and conducted the first docking of two spacecraft in orbit, but suffered the first critical in-space system failure of a US spacecraft which threatened the lives of the astronauts and required the immediate abort of the mission. The crew was returned to Earth safely. The only other time this happened was on the flight of Apollo 13. A great piece from a NASA insider present during the Golden Age of manned space exploration. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
